2019 Reading Wrap-Up!

2019 has been my best year of reading so far in 31 years. Partially owing to an 8 week absence from work that saw me hit my highest monthly round ups EVER – see here, here aaaand here!

I’m please to discover that not only did I smash my GoodReads challenge at 127 of 100 books, I also -purely by accident- balanced the scales at 52% books written by women.

As for genre, I had a total fantasy binge at the beginning of the year thanks to encouragement from the likes of Circe, The Bone Season, The Poppy War and a growing obsession with fairytale re-tellings such as Uprooted, To Kill A Kingdom and more.

Horror remains my top tier as always with Flame Tree Press publisher leading the charge. Thriller almost keeping up and Dystopian falling back due to an influx of similar story lines and too many actual scares in real world current events. I’ve categorised Sci-Fi with Fantasy for the chart below.

You may remember my Series To Finish 2019- Sign Up & TBR early in 2019, where I pledged to read 34 titles. This included both King’s The Dark Tower, and Harry Potter accounting for 14 of the books and one of my New Year Resolutions 2019 ; to re-read.

Welp, aside from a nostalgic re-read of Goosebumps at Halloween, I completely failed that resolution. Do You Re-read Books?, Once again my aim to revisit Harry Potter and Roland Deschain follows me into the New Year! I did however, complete 7 of the 10 unfinished series I pledged- without beginning the 5 owned.

Speaking of owned- my TBR begins this year in much the same position in 2019; currently over 340 unread, owned titles BUT my spending has decreased thanks to further time investment in Netgalley and a little bookish networking.

But never mind these stats, you came here to see what I read didn’t you?  Continue reading “2019 Reading Wrap-Up!”

October Reading Wrap-Up

Welcome back ghosts and ghouls,
I think it’s about time I posted another wrap up, it’s been a while! Being October you’ll find my TBR was mostly Halloween themed last month.
I’ve shied away from long novels recently, (my re-read of IT was abandoned before it even began) so I managed to finish a good amount of books this month. Take a look;

February Reading Wrap-Up 2019

Look at this! Two wrap-ups in one month? That’s as many as I managed in the entirety of 2018. Yep, I know- I’m extremely inconsistent. So if you missed the first half of my month you can catch up with me right here: Reading Wrap-Up 18/02

If I’m being honest I had a little extra time on my hands this month. I’m still waiting for a diagnosis from my doctor and unfortunately we had to cancel our trip to Madrid this week due to my ill health. On the upside, I have a week off work with no obligations- of course I’m gonna read!

Including the six books I unashamedly bragged about in week 2 I managed a grand total of 14. I made a dent in my TBR for Fantasy/Fairy-tale February, struck some more titles from my Series-To-Finish hit list (Series To Finish 2019- Sign Up & TBR) and managed a few of last years backlist (2018 -Books I Meant To Read) Not bad for the shortest month of the year! Leaving me at a current position of… drum roll… Continue reading “February Reading Wrap-Up 2019”

October Wrap-up & Book Haul

Two consecutive wrap-ups? I’m as surprised as you are! Here’s what I got up to last month..

October is my FAVOURITE month of the year. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not huge on Halloween as a holiday. I don’t decorate the house, I’m allergic to raw pumpkin and my years of stumbling home drunk in a slutty witch costume are long dead.
No, I love October for the scary vibes! The colder days and darker nights are perfect for reading and watching all the new horror releases. Continue reading “October Wrap-up & Book Haul”

September Wrap-up & Book Haul

Book hauls, confessions and what I read in September

Newsflash! I am a lazy blogger. I may not seem it but that’s only thanks to the wonder of a good schedule. Most of the posts you’ll see on An Average Life were written weeks or sometimes months before they are published. I’m not sure I’ve ever written and posted on the same day, I simply cannot be trusted to finish what I start!

Now I love blog hopping around wrap-up posts, WWWs, Book hauls and the like. Every time I read these I think- I should do this- and I neeeever get around to it.

Well this month I have! I’d love to say I’ll do it regularly but I know damn well I won’t. So for my first ever wrap-up, read on to find out about my Average Life in September.. Continue reading “September Wrap-up & Book Haul”
