It’s finally October! Horror lovers rejoice!
Of course I couldn’t pick just one reading challenge for this month, with so many fantastic halloween/genre based options it was just too difficult! I’ve managed to narrow my choices down to 3 definite attempts though Books In The Freezer was never in question, I HAD to take this on.
Here’s my TBR, though being a mood reader this list is changeable as always..
1. Read a horror book by a female author:
Ania Ahlborn- The Shuddering
I have several Ahlborn novels and haven’t gotten around to any of them yet so this is where I shall start. Tana French was a close second.
2. Read an anthology or short story collection:
Well folks, as luck would have it I was approved by Knopf Doubleday to receive an eARC of Hark The Herald Angels Scream! This was my first ever Netgalley approval so I hold high hopes as I doubt I’ll ever forget it.
3. Read a book with a POC or LGBTQ main character:
I took to Twitter and asked a few of my fav horror reviewers for recommendations here and I decided to go with
The Returned by Jason Mott
4. Read a horror book that has a movie adaptation:
I can’t tell you what I’ll choose here! I know by this point in the challenge I’ll be looking for flexibility. Instead here are the options I will pick from..
The Exorcist, Rosemarys Baby, Dracula, The Girl With All The Gifts.
5. Read a book recommended on the podcast:
Again I have a few options to hand so I’ll be choosing from..
Swan Song, The Last Days Of Jack Sparks, Hex, The Halloween Tree, Kin or Ill Will.
Since I’ve also decided to try BYOBathon and CharmsExtraCredit this month I will be attempting to squeeze in as many crossover books as possible!
Wish me luck..
Are you doing any October reading challenges?
Do you have any guidance for my TBR choices in challenge 4 and 5?
Let me know here or @AnAverageLife88 ..
I’m an absolute wimp in the face of horror books. This looks a terrifying list. Good luck with it.

I haven’t read any of the books on this list except ‘The Girl With All the Gifts’ but I loved that one! I don’t read all that much horror but I would recommend ‘Handling the Undead’ by John Ajvide Lindqvist, ‘Alice Isn’t Dead’ by Joseph Fink, ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ by Iain Reid, and ‘The Wasp Factory’ by Iain Banks. btw, I love the cover art for ‘Hark The Herald Angels Scream!’ I don’t read a lot of short stories but I’d like to give that one a try.
